In special education, progress is often measured through speech, motor skills, or academic achievement. While these are essential, another form of growth is equally important: the development of the human spirit. At the LSL Inclusive Centre, we ensure that every student, whatever their learning path, feels a strong sense of belonging and an empowered sense of character.
Our Hari Raya celebration brought this mission to life. The centre was filled with colour, laughter, and joy. Students exchanged gifts, danced, decorated cupcakes, and joined quizzes. For children with special needs, these activities are more than entertainment. We design them as opportunities to practise Deep Learning in ways that match their strengths.

Why Cultural Celebration Matters in Special Education
For students in our Inclusive Learning Programme, the world can sometimes feel overwhelming. Celebrations such as Hari Raya and Chinese New Year provide joyful yet structured frameworks for learning social cues and community values.
When we celebrated Chinese New Year in February, our students began to understand the rhythm of our multicultural society. Returning to these themes for Hari Raya gives them the consistency they need to feel secure. We treat diversity as central to our curriculum, never as an optional activity. Every child learns that culture, race, and religion are constants to be celebrated, and that every person has a rightful place at the table.
Deep Learning: The 6Cs in the Inclusive Classroom
Our philosophy is rooted in New Pedagogies for Deep Learning (NPDL). Although often seen as a mainstream framework, NPDL is powerful in special education. By focusing on the 6Cs, we give students the tools to build strong character and resilience.
Communication Beyond Words In the ILP, communication takes many forms, including speech, art, movement, or gestures. A dance becomes a conversation. A handmade craft becomes a message of friendship. Deep Learning happens when students realise they can connect meaningfully, whatever their challenges.
Character and Resilience For a child with sensory sensitivities, joining a dance or quiz requires courage. Today, we saw students who once felt overwhelmed now step forward with smiles. This is character in action, confidence built through resilience.
Collaboration and Empathy Cupcake decoration becomes a lesson in teamwork. Sharing materials, waiting for turns, and admiring a peer’s work nurture empathy. Students learn to celebrate each other’s success, creating bonds that go beyond words.
A Consistent Vision of Empowerment
At the LSL Inclusive Centre, we move away from seeing “special needs” as a limitation. Instead, we see extraordinary potential. By celebrating cultures, we teach students to be Global Citizens. When students learn about Hari Raya, they also learn kindness, respect, and shared values.
Aligning Values with Growth
For children with special needs, self‑advocacy and confidence are ultimate goals. By celebrating their traditions, we tell them: You are seen. You are valued. Your presence matters. This is empowerment at its highest form.
A Message to Our Families

We provide every child with the scaffolding they need to flourish. We are proud of their progress and excited to watch them grow into confident, compassionate individuals.
