In the world of special education, we often talk about milestones in terms of speech, motor skills, or academic progress. While these are essential, there is another category of growth that is equally vital: the development of the human spirit. At the LSL Inclusive Centre, our mission is to ensure that every student, regardless of their unique learning path, feels a deep sense of belonging and an empowered sense of character.
Today, we saw this mission in action during our Hari Raya celebration. The centre was transformed into a space of colour and shared laughter. Our students engaged in gift exchanges, dancing, and activities like cupcake decoration and quizzes. However, for a child with special needs, these activities are far more than “fun.” They are carefully designed opportunities to practice Deep Learning in a way that resonates with their individual strengths.

Why Cultural Celebration Matters in Special Education
For students in our Inclusive Learning Programme, the world can sometimes feel overwhelming or difficult to navigate. Traditional celebrations like Hari Raya and Chinese New Year provide a structured yet joyful framework for understanding social cues and community values.
When we celebrated Chinese New Year in February, our students began to understand the rhythm of our multicultural society. By returning to these themes today for Hari Raya, we provide the consistency that many of our learners need to feel secure. Celebrating different cultures, races, and religions is not an “extra” activity for us; it is a core component of our curriculum. It teaches our students that diversity is a beautiful constant in their lives, and that every person, no matter their background or ability, has a place at the table.
Deep Learning: The 6Cs in the Inclusive Classroom
Our educational philosophy is rooted in New Pedagogies for Deep Learning (NPDL). For many, NPDL might seem like a framework for mainstream classrooms, but we have found it to be incredibly powerful within the Inclusive Centre. By focusing on the “6Cs”, we provide our students with the tools to build a strong internal character.
1. Character and Resilience For a student with sensory sensitivities, participating in a group dance or a lively quiz requires immense courage and “grit.” We saw students today who, in the past, might have felt overwhelmed, now stepping forward to exchange a gift with a smile. This is the definition of character. They are learning to navigate new experiences with confidence, building a resilience that will serve them long after they leave our halls.
2. Collaboration and Empathy Activities like cupcake decoration are perfect for practising collaboration. Sharing materials, waiting for a turn with the frosting, and admiring a peer’s work are all sophisticated social interactions. For our students, these moments are where empathy is born. They learn to see the joy in their friend’s success, creating a bond that transcends verbal communication.
3. Communication Beyond Words In the ILP, communication takes many forms. While some of our students use speech, others communicate through art, movement, or gestures. Our celebration allows students to express themselves. A dance becomes a conversation; a handmade craft becomes a message of friendship. Deep learning happens when a child realises they can connect with others in a meaningful way, regardless of their challenges.
A Consistent Vision of Empowerment
Our vision for the LSL Inclusive Centre is to move away from the idea of “special needs” as a limitation. Instead, we see our students as children with “extraordinary potential.” By instilling the importance of celebrating different cultures, we are teaching them to be Global Citizens.
We want our students to grow up with the understanding that they are part of a wide, diverse world. When they learn about the significance of Hari Raya, they are not just learning about a holiday; they are learning about the values of their neighbours. They are learning that kindness, respect, and celebration are universal languages.
Aligning Values with Growth
For a child with special needs, self-advocacy and self-confidence are the ultimate goals. When we celebrate their culture and the cultures of those around them, we are telling them: “You are seen. You are valued. Your traditions and your presence matter.” This is the highest form of empowerment we can offer.
A Message to Our Families
To our parents, we understand the journey you are on. We know that you want a school that sees the heart of your child, not just their diagnosis. We are dedicated to creating an environment where compassion is the standard, and where every child is given the “scaffolding” they need to flourish. We are incredibly proud of the progress our students have made, and we look forward to watching them continue to grow into the confident, compassionate individuals we know they can be.
