Finish your final IGCSE paper, close the revision books, and then what? For many teenagers, the weeks following examinations are spent passively waiting for results. At Lead International School, we prefer to use this valuable window of time to give our young adults a real, practical head start on their future paths.
Through our Year 11 Internship Programme, students step straight out of the examination hall and directly into functioning professional departments across our campus. It is a structured opportunity to test their career interests, understand the day-to-day realities of different industries, and learn by actually doing the work.
1. Why Practical Experience Matters Before University
Textbooks and lectures can teach core theory, but they cannot replicate the fast pace of an administrative office, the patience required in a classroom, or the real-time problem-solving needed during a live event.
We created this programme because the best way to discover if a career path is the right fit is to try it firsthand. By placing our Year 11 students alongside working professionals in operations, academic leadership, marketing, and specialized therapy, they get an unfiltered, authentic look at what working in those fields genuinely entails.
2. Where Our Interns Work: Exploring Departmental Placements
Every student chooses an area aligned with their personal ambitions and tertiary plans. Rather than observing from the sidelines, our interns are given genuine responsibility and expected to contribute to daily goals.
Business, Finance, and School Operations

Students considering degrees in business management, accounting, or corporate operations join our administrative and finance teams. They assist with daily financial record-keeping, administrative organisation, and invoice processing, gaining clear insight into how an educational institution manages its resources.
Alongside finance, students interested in facility management and engineering were placed in our maintenance and operations team. These interns worked alongside our facilities staff, assisting in the day-to-day operations and physical upkeep of the school. From inspecting school infrastructure to coordinating daily maintenance schedules, they learned the vital background work required to keep a large school running safely and smoothly.
Academic Administration Working with the Principal
For students curious about institutional leadership, educational policy, or high-level administration, placements were created within the academic administration department. Working directly alongside our Principal, interns observed how school policies are implemented, assisted with academic documentation, and helped organise upcoming term schedules. This unique placement offered young adults a rare view into strategic decision-making and executive leadership.
Information Management in the Library Department
For students who enjoy literature, research, or system organisation, a placement was established within our Library Department. Interns learned the fundamentals of information management, assisting staff to catalogue, organise, and arrange books according to specific library systems and operational needs.

Beyond administrative archiving, interns actively participated in our library reading programme. They took on mentorship roles by reading stories to younger peers, guiding them through reading exercises, and helping build early literacy skills and reading confidence across our primary years.

The LSL Inclusive Learning Centre

For students drawn to psychology, human services, or healthcare, placement in the LSL Inclusive Learning Centre (our dedicated centre for special needs students) provided a deeply meaningful experience. Interns worked closely alongside our in-house child psychologist and learning support specialists, gaining firsthand experience in supporting children with diverse learning and developmental needs. They assisted in therapeutic sessions, observed individualised learning plans in action, and developed profound empathy, patience, and professional awareness.

Creative Marketing and Event Management
Creative thinkers exploring communications, public relations, or media production were integrated directly into our marketing department. Our interns hit the ground running with real-world projects. They helped craft social media content and promotional materials for our LSL Annual Charity Carnival, learning how to build community engagement around a major school event.

Additionally, our marketing interns took on active roles in external outreach, assisting our team at the SJK(C) Yak Chee Edufair roadshow. From interacting with visiting parents to capturing event photography, they experienced the dynamics of event management and brand representation firsthand.

Early Years Education and Teaching
Students exploring careers in early childhood education or child development were placed in our pre-primary classrooms. Working alongside experienced teachers, they helped prepare daily learning activities, organised educational materials, and assisted in managing classroom routines. To see how our early childhood framework is structured from the ground up, explore our Pre-Primary & Reception Programme.
3. The Skills That Stay With Them
By the end of their placements, our Year 11 interns walk away with much more than a strong addition to their university applications. They leave with a grounded sense of self-reliance and emotional maturity.
- Clearer Career Focus: Experiencing a role firsthand helps students decide whether a specific university course or career path is truly right for them before committing time and resources.
- Professional Communication: Learning how to interact appropriately with supervisors, adult colleagues, external event visitors, and younger children.
- Personal Accountability: Managing daily working hours, meeting project deadlines, and taking pride in completed work.
- Empathy and Social Awareness: Working alongside special needs educators and young learners builds deep emotional intelligence and adaptability.
